UEFA Nations League: Di Lorenzo Shines in Italy-Israel Clash
Defender Giovanni Di Lorenzo was the beau of the ball after netting two of Italy’s goals in a thrilling 4-1 group stage victory in the UEFA Nations League on Monday night, 14 October.
Playing at Bluenergy Stadium in Udine, Italy, the national men’s team were sure-fire favourites to prevail over their Israeli opponents. However, it took 41 minutes for them to break the deadlock.
Just before halftime, striker Mateo Retegui converted a stunning penalty, sending the ball into the top corner of the net. Following the break, Di Lorenzo headed in Italy’s second goal in the 54th minute.
The 66th minute saw Mohammed Abu Fani score Israel’s sole goal of the game, but the Blues quickly retaliated six minutes later with a goal from midfielder Davide Frattesi.
In the 79th minute, Di Lorenzo struck again with a successful shot, securing Italy’s 4-1 triumph.
As a result of this victory, Italy sit at the top of the Nations League Group Two rankings with 10 points, while Israel sit at the bottom with zero points.
